About this work
Friends is a work loosely inspired by Grant Wood's American Gothic. The painting neither copies nor parodies the original. Instead, it deconstructs and reconstructs the idea with a new urgency. Its version replaces the stoic farmers with a man and a young woman, serene and calm, yet charged with presence. The house is gone. What remains is the dynamic between the couple and the unspoken implications of their position. There is no drama in the scene, but that is where the tension builds. The stillness. In the artist's hands, stillness does not mean pause, but accumulation. Time is present in the painting, pressing against the surface. It questions what roles have been assigned to the man and the woman, and which ones they have assumed themselves.
